Wearable Technology

Wearable technology has exploded in the past decade – everything from smart watches, fitness trackers and contactless payment, to learning tasks by wearing “smart” glasses.

Here are some new wearable technologies (with thanks to Startus Insights):Here’s what happened when one company did this …

  • This one might be a game-changer (pun intended) for team sports at all levels: There’s nothing unusual about clubs analyzing data generated during training and games, but the way data is collected is changing. Spanish startup Humanox has developed smart shin guards that incorporate accelerometers, miniature photosensors, and highly sensitive microphones to detect fatigue, distance, speed, heart rate, and positional statistics. Team coaches can slice and dice the data in whatever way is useful for determining future game strategies.

  • For health care professionals who are passionate about maintaining relationships with their patients, time is an extremely finite commodity. As much as they would like to regularly check on all their patients, it’s not always possible. French startup Grapheal has developed wearable, disposable biosensors that provide continuous patient monitoring. This gives the healthcare provider far more information and flexibility in determining whether a patient needs in-person attention or if their symptoms are treatable at home.

  • Fauna is an Austrian startup that designs audio glasses. Audio glasses combine lenses, Bluetooth, speakers, microphones, and touch control in a single frame to enable hands-free and outer-ears-free phone calls, voice messages, and listening to music. The glasses stay connected up to 10 meters from the host device and are energy efficient.
